Sam Friedman Watermelons

Watermelons marked Sam Friedman’s first full solo exhibition at Joshua Liner Gallery, on view from June 1 to July 1, 2017. The show featured a new body of vibrant abstract paintings that explored the space between recognition and abstraction. Working freehand with layers of flat acrylic, Friedman developed a unique visual alphabet, balancing precise geometric forms with spontaneous, organic movement. Each composition unfolded through a meditative process, where every mark was permanent, and even minor imperfections were embraced as part of the work’s handmade authenticity.

Born in 1984 in Oneonta, New York, Sam Friedman received his BFA from Pratt Institute in 2006. A former studio assistant to KAWS, Friedman has since developed a distinct style rooted in intuitive mark-making and vivid color relationships. He has exhibited widely, with solo shows at Library Street Collective, Space 1026, and Nuartlink Gallery, and his work has been included in group exhibitions at Joshua Liner Gallery, Guerrero Gallery, and others. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
