Michael Kagan Thunder in the Distance
Thunder in the Distance presents new oil paintings by New York–based artist Michael Kagan, featuring large-scale and smaller works that explore humanity’s drive to transcend physical limits through technology. Drawing inspiration from aviation, space travel, and man-made machinery, Kagan depicts rockets, racecars, cockpits, and spacesuits rendered in thick, aggressive impasto. Up close, the paintings verge on abstraction; from a distance, the imagery resolves into powerful figurative forms. Referencing the first sonic boom—mistaken for “thunder in the distance”—the exhibition reflects on ambition, risk, and the thin line between human achievement and vulnerability.
